From Records to Research

Researchers often rely on student information to advance understanding and improve educational practices—but doing so responsibly requires a clear understanding of FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). 

This interactive workshop explores how FERPA applies to research activities involving student records, data, or academic information. Participants will learn when and how research use of student data is permitted, what exceptions apply, and how to safeguard privacy throughout the research process.

Through real-world scenarios, discussion, and practical examples, attendees will:

• Distinguish between FERPA-protected and non-protected data.
• Understand FERPA’s research exception
• Identify common pitfalls and best practices for data security and compliance.

This session will provide faculty, graduate researchers, and research support staff with the tools to conduct research responsibly and in full compliance with FERPA, while upholding student privacy rights.
